Tough to say. The growth of netbooks may be a sea change in the market, not just a temporary market blip. If so, Apple will need to address this somehow. They need not build a netbook, but they may need to something that fits that niche for customers.

Sorry that I can't get into the Mercedes analogy, because of the facts:

1. Daimler owned Chrysler for a while. Not Chevy, no, but still.
2. Daimler makes the Smart Car, not the Aveo, but smaller.
3. in Europe, the A class is a totally reasonable, non-luxury vehicle. Mercedes is an only-luxury brand only in the US.

So, uh, what was that about netbooks?

Owning several Macs, no PCs and drive a 600SL, I agree with your analogy. There will not be an Apple netbook, but watch for a large iPod Touch, much like the Amazon Kindle to sell between $495-$695.

"Book View" for PDFs and purchased on-line content, etc and a rotated "Video View" for visuals. Its not a Mac its a big iPod.

I'd want one that size if just based on the fact it would come with a larger battery and most likely give more time between charges. It would definitely make a great game player if you're content with button-less tactile input.

With Apple, I think we're talking about a price tag of at least $700, which isn't exactly Kindle 2 cheap.

Jazz1,

I agree. The reason my wife and I own a Touch, and not an iPhone(s) is primarily the contract cost, and indirectly AT&T. A good friend of mine called last week when contemplating an iPhone purchase and asked about tethering, this was a deal breaker for her. Your two sentences have cost Apple 2-3 iPhone sales that I'm personally aware of.

For a netbook to be truly useful it has to have 3G along with Wifi. Prices of 3G services really make it a deal killer though for most of us. Carriers really need to bring the price down or allow tethering from smartphones.
